The two resources below are selected if I would need to create online Art Literacy courses.

The first OER:

Edutopia: Stretching your Curriculum Canvas

Learning outcome: by the end of this reading and accompanying material the student will derive an understanding of how art connects with people on different levels.

This particular resource is useful for helping the student gain some insight and knowledge of actually developing a visual vocabulary. Art literacy is a strange and difficult subject as it tends to split in two directions. The first is covered in this lessons direction, that of understanding what an artist might be thinking and how it might touch others viewing it. This tends to be such an abstract concept for middle and even high school students that it can be difficult to convey.

The pros of using the resource:

It is free and accessible.
The content is easy to follow and understand.
The material is relevant and informative.
Supporting material is easily notated.

The cons of using the resource:

Accessibility, those without access to computers cannot gain access to this work.
There will often be additional prep for you to do to go along with this resource, such as sourcing the right support material and/or providing access to an online museum for access to appropriate artworks.

The second OER:

5 Ways to Bring Literacy into the Art Classroom

Learning outcome: This resource provides excellent examples for helping to access the other side of Art Literacy, actual literacy. These may be implemented in actual classrooms, but several can be adapted to digital use as well.

This particular resource is somewhat more limited that the previous one, but it only touches upon using tools to help bring up the skills of language learners using the art classroom. Therefore it does provide a useful resource for how to engage the learners in various aspects of that specific task.

The pros of using the resource:

The website is easy to navigate.

The cons of using the resource:

The resource is very limited and requires additional work outside the resource to help implement anything of lasting use.
